Kind words from current students.

Did you say "YES" to all of the above?

Of course you did!  Who wouldn’t want to become the go-to designer of the crochet community? Why wouldn’t you want to ensure that your patterns are the best they can be?

By working with a tech editor and perfecting your crochet patterns now, you will save yourself so much frustration and time in the long run.  This will free you up to focus on the more important things in life, whatever that is for you!

Here's how I can help

As your tech editor, I will examine your pattern line by line to ensure that it is clear and accurate. The goal is, not to change your pattern, but to enhance it by catching any errors or offer clarity if needed.

Here are some specific things that I will be watching for:

Formatting
  • is the overall look of the pattern consistent throughout?
  •  are all necessary sections included?
  • are all abbreviations used in the pattern listed & explained?
Stitch Counts
  • do the numbers in each row add up to the final stitch count provided?
  • does the written instructions match the crochet chart?
Measurements
  • do the finished sizes calculate properly according to gauge?
  • do the pictures and sample match the written pattern?

frequently asked questions

You've got Q's? I've got A's.

A tech editor meticulously examines every aspect of your pattern.  After you have spent literally days looking at the same document, it is quite easy to overlook some of the fine details.  They bring a fresh set of eyes, expertise and attention to detail that can catch some of those pesky little mistakes. The end goal is to help you achieve a pattern that is accurate, clear and error-free.

There are almost too many to count!  By working with a tech editor, you can make a world of difference in your journey as a crochet designer.

Tech editing improves the usability of your patterns and adds a touch of professionalism to your work. It shows that you care about the quality of your designs and that you’re committed to delivering the best possible product to your customers. This builds trust, credibility, and a loyal following.

By having a tech editor review your pattern, you can be confident that your pattern will provide an enjoyable and seamless experience for those who use it. No more frustrating moments of confusion or endless pattern support requests from users struggling with your instructions.

Both play an important role in the design process but they serve different purposes and have distinct responsibilities.

A tech editor specializes in reviewing and refining your pattern. Their primary focus is on the technical aspects of the pattern, such as stitch counts, formatting, and terminology. They ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency.

Unlike the tech editor, the pattern tester physically crochets the item as instructed in the pattern to identify any issues, errors, or areas that may need clarification from a user’s perspective. Pattern testers will access the accuracy of the sizing or fit of the finished item and will provide feedback on the overall usability of the pattern and share their insights, challenges, and successes.

The two roles compliment each other, helping designers produce high-quality, error-free patterns that provide a positive user experience.

For individual patterns, I offer my services at a flat rate ranging from $35 – $65+ CAD and $5 extra per size (if applicable). You can find the breakdown above. Please feel free to contact me if you would like an estimate prior to going ahead.

If you have a collection that you would like to have tech edited in it’s entirety, please contact me for a quote.

I was formally trained by Carol Ibbetson (a successful tech editor and designer) of Cool Wool School and graduated from her comprehensive crochet tech editing course. There I practiced my tech editing skills on “real-life” crochet patterns and received constructive feedback.

I continue to learn from fellow tech editors and I am always eager to expand my education and knowledge in the fiber arts and hope to be able to share my knowledge with you!

As a published crochet designer myself, I understand that a well-crafted pattern is the key to happy customers and a thriving business.  With this experience and tech editing training, I am able to assist you in creating your own high quality patterns that keep your customers continually coming back for more!

Prior to having your pattern tech edited, you will want to have your pattern as close to the final stages as possible. This includes your gauge, final measurements, figure pictures, and charts. The more information you include, the more efficient the review will be and ultimately the less it will cost for the service.

You can forward your pattern to me as a Word document, a PDF, or as a Google doc. If you have it in some other format, please let me know and I will see if I can accommodate.
